Elmahary Veterinary Clinic is a full-service veterinary clinic that sells Royal Canin dog and cat food and packets of Kite Kat moist cat food. Alnaja Veterinary Company Ltd. is a full-service veterinary clinic that sells Royal Canin dog and cat food, pet medicine, leashes, carriers, and other supplies. Aquarium Pet Shop The name of the shop is Aquarium Gold Fish (all in Arabic) but it sells a variety of products for dogs, cats, and birds. Located west of the Old City on Girgaresh Road, just east of the Wadi on the south side of the street, has a pretty good selection of pet food, including Friskies and Royal Canin dog and cat food, as well as packets of Whiskas and Kite Kat moist cat food. They also sell birds and a large variety of fish, as well as foods and accoutrements for them. Also available are the following: cat litter, leashes and collars, and scratching posts and flea shampoos. Keep in mind that stock varies and what is available one week might not be the next. (This shop was previously located in a small kiosk outside Al Mahary grocery store.) Al Aruba Grocery Store The store’s name is written only in Arabic on the front of the building and it's extremely difficult to see the front of the building if you're heading east, close-up to the building. Recently renovated, Al Aruba carries a variety of imported grocery items and is popular with foreigners. It has a limited supply of pet products including Dog & Co. dry dog chow, Friskies, Multicroc, and Croccantini brand dry cat food, Felix, Sheba, and Kite Kat moist cat food packets, as well as a limited supply of pet and bird food. Al Shurouq, referred to by expats as "The German Store. There is no sign or other indication of the store’s name on the building but foreigners have traditionally referred to it as “the German store” because of its history. The true name is Al Shurouq and it stocks a reasonably large supply of pet products including Friskies and Purina dry cat chow, Snappy Tom cat food in cans and packets, Kitou canned cat food, and Gourmet brand cat food packets. For dogs, they have Royce canned food, and a very limited quantity of dry dog chow. There are also several kinds of fish foods and some bird food. Shelves also offer a limited assortment of leashes, collars, and miscellaneous pet products. You will find a good supply of cat litter, but the price will shock you. They stock a handful of pet carriers, a single dog house, some beds and water bowls. Suq Dubay Grocery Store has a small but well-stocked display of cat food, including Friskies dry food, Whiskas moist food packets, Miaow cans, and Felix canned cat food. I didn't find any dog food there. Al Emary Grocery Store, referred to by expats as "the Italian Store," has cat food and fish food, but no dog food. They carry Royal Canin dry cat food, Friskies dry cat food and Kite Kat moist cat food packets. Hobbyist House Pet Shop has 3 loctions and specializes in birds, fish, and accessories, but carries a wide variety of dog and cat food and a large selection of leashes, carriers, beds, bones, treats, etc. The shops carry Royal Canin and Purina brand dog and cat chow as well as some other brands. Packaged cat foods include Friskies, Whiskas, and Kite Cat. Libyan Government Animal Clinic can provide you with a very basic flea powder that needs to be mixed with talcum powder (1:1 ratio). At their on-site pharmacy, you may also purchase worm pills and other drugs prescribed by a veterinarian.
A Note About Cat Litter: In lieu of imported, packaged cat litter, which is very expensive when available, it is common to find people using “clean sand” –the kind used in gardening nurseries. We were able to purchase sand from a roadside nursery where we happened to be buying some flowers. Bring your own heavy-duty bags or plastic container or you’ll have to try your luck with the leaky, second-hand shopping bags available to the nursery.
